Michael B. Jordan, Creed III actor, and Director, shares how the Rocky movie series’ latest entry was inspired by Dragon Ball Z.
Michael B. Jordan is the director and leading actor of Creed III. He revealed how Dragon Ball Z inspired Creed III’s ninth installment.
Otaku USA reports that Jordan talked about the anime influences in Creed III during IGN Fan Fest. “Without needing too much… You have seen so many fights throughout the Rocky and Creed franchise. And I wanted my spin on it. Jordan stated. Jordan stated. It’s very much like the brotherhood that Damian Anderson [Adonis] and Damian Creed have, as well as his [Adonis] relationships with his families. So I tried to pinpoint some of those moments.”
Creed III includes a Dragon Ball Z-Style Punch
Jordan highlighted Dragon Ball Zas an anime influence that fans should be aware of in Creed III. In particular, the Dragon Ball Z punch that Jordan used to fight Jonathan Majors and Damian Anderson. Although no specific moves were mentioned, Goku was the original series’ protagonist and has delivered memorable punches in the Dragon Ball series.
Jordan is not the first to talk about his love of manga and anime. Jordan mentioned in a previous interview that some sequences of the movie were inspired by Hajime No Ippo’s boxing anime. “With Hajime No Ippo and other similar anime, I enjoy the inner dialogue about what’s happening in the ring from characters,” he said.
Creed III features Adonis “Donnie”, Creed, and Damian “Dame,” Anderson in a winner’s take-all match. The drama marks the ninth entry in the Rocky franchise. It also marks the first time without original star Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa. Stallone bowed out after Jordon Winkler took a dark turn. The cast also includes Tessa Thompson, Florian Munteanu, and Mary Anne Creed’s Mary Anne Creed.
Creed III is opening in North America on March 3.
